A New Found Sense Of Excitement For My Photography....

At sixty, I find myself standing at a fascinating crossroads. Validation for my creative work has become more than just a nod of approval—it's become the fuel that propels me forward.

However, the journey to this point was filled with self-doubt and the ever-consent impostor syndrome.

Years ago, I remembered being faced with what seemed like a daunting task at the time but which proved to be a catalyst that would change my career trajectory. I volunteered for a high-stakes photo session with a leading television actress for a national newspaper. Until then, my experience in a photo studio was limited to assisting a seasoned photographer. The intricacies of studio lighting and the pressure of capturing the perfect shot were all new territory for me. I felt like a new actor stepping onto a grand stage, out of my depth and wondering if I could do this and the consequences of getting it wrong.

But I stepped forward. I set up my equipment, directed my subject, and let my instincts guide me. That first studio shoot wasn't just a job but a proving ground. It was where I confronted my insecurities head-on and discovered that my passion for photography was more significant than my fear of failure.

That pivotal assignment led to more opportunities, each one a stepping stone that built my confidence and refined my skills. Every seasoned professional was once a beginner who had to take a leap of faith.

Today, my work is fueled by a sense of urgency and excitement. I know where I'm going, and I understand my creative voice. This newfound clarity feels like a liberation, freeing me to explore more fantastic ideas and concepts that once seemed intimidating and way out of my comfort zone.

Instead of shying away from the unknown, I embrace these challenges. There's no fear, only a thrilling anticipation of what lies ahead.

Reaching this age, I've realised it's possible to seek out new belongings and dive into uncharted waters; it's like I have the enthusiasm of a beginner and the wisdom of experience. The fear that once held me back has been replaced by a profound excitement—a realisation that every new challenge is an opportunity for more growth and discovery.

It sounds like I've found my road to Damascus; that may be true.

This realisation has come about only from reflecting on my career's work. I've been honoured with my own large-scale photography exhibition in my adopted home of Ipswich, East Anglia.
