MY FRIDAY PHOTO STORIES...Pt 2

My environmental portraits aim to grant equal status to both the subject and the background, connecting the story or narrative - to hold and capture the viewer's attention. For example, this photograph of Baroness Amos, taken over ten years ago, is still a favourite of mine and is included in my portfolio.

Lady Amos was then the Leader of the House of Lords. When I arrived at Valerie's office, which holds a prime position at the House of Lords, I remember being a little disappointed at how dark the room was, very heavy, dark ornate wood panelling and tanned-coloured ceilings, with equally unappealing furniture.

I noticed Valerie's bright pink coat hanging on the back of the door and knew this would make for a strong image against the dark and austere looking room, trying to keep the story simple. But I still wasn't happy with the photographs. Sensing my unease at the images we had just taken, Valerie asked if I needed anything else? I then pointed to a heavy-looking lead & glass door covered by a thin piece of curtain. I asked, "where does this lead to?" I opened the door to find a small balcony overlooking Westminster Abbey; I couldn't have been happier. I managed to produce 5 or 6 great frames from this position. Valeria really loved being photographed overlooking Westminster too, which was a bonus.

We went away, all feeling great after this very successful photo session.

As a photographer, you have to take control of the moment. This is even more important, especially when photographing celebrities; like most people, they need direction; you have to think on your feet before they start getting bored and want to wrap up the shoot.

I think my love for environmental portraits comes from my love of communities, culture, subcultures, and minority groups. I also love utilising a photojournalistic or editorial approach to my work.

Could you see yourself photographed in an environment that means something special to you - for your business? Let me know what environment would work best for you. Or whether you'd like an incredible looking portrait of yourself in your favourite location.
