Approaching Strangers for Their Portraits…can you do it?

I’ve said it before, but one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a portrait photographer is coming across individuals with something a little extra. It doesn’t have to be much, in fact, less is more as far as I'm concerned, but I’m always on the lookout for people with character. As a portrait photographer, whether I’m shooting street portraits or environmental or studio portraits, I’m trying to eke out that particular person’s character, which as most of you know, is always a challenge, but one that I love to do. 

I spotted your Jordyn on a sunny day in Felixstowe in Suffolk. After saying hello and introducing myself, I asked to take her picture, which she happily agreed to. I thought she looked wonderful; she had something mysterious and enigmatic about her, and I bet she’d have an intriguing story to tell about her life too. 

I’ve been asked many times about how I approach strangers to photograph. So many photographers find this extremely difficult, stopping and asking strangers for their pictures. And I can totally understand their fears and hesitation.

So it's with this in mind I’ve now put together a one-day workshop which aims to help photographers or anyone with a camera, develop the confidence to approach and produce editorial-style portraits of strangers.
