‘Lifestyle Photography’…But what exactly does it mean?

It’s a fact that today thousands of magazines around the world, numerous websites and hundreds of outside billboards, bus shelters and advertising posters have all one thing in common. They all carry ‘lifestyle’ images. But what exactly are lifestyle images? Well, according to Wikipedia, lifestyle photography is “a style of portrait / people photography which aims to capture and document real-life events, situations, or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday.”
I’m personally being asked more and more for lifestyle images, not only from photo agents and libraries but now from private clients too. My business clients want images the show real life experiences from their ‘in the field workers’, workshops, and group activities to better sell their products. Private clients now are seemingly wanting that clean everyday happy family or ‘couples look’ that they’ve seen in those magazines, websites or on Tv adverts.

For my private clients, lifestyle sessions incorporate things that they would typically do. This could be hanging out at home, going to their favourite coffee shop, record shops, clothes or even bookshops. It’s about incorporating “real-life events” into these sessions.
Lifestyle locations are always chosen by clients. I also throw in a few ideas and situations myself, but I always ask them what they’d like to do, with the final choice being there’s. Locations should be special to you, something that you’ll remember. So do you love to take part in a particular sport or are you in to keeping fit? Do you or your kids love to cook, horse riding,  playing on the beach, or just walking the dog?

I act as a fly on the wall photographer, being as discreet as possible. Some people, families need a little direction, this is all good, all sessions are kept as natural as possible. It’s finding the right balance that’s most important to capturing the moments and activities that you’ll remember forever. It’s images that will go into your photo albums, or on your walls, ones that will be showed for many years to come.
